Concrete
The word concrete comes from the Latin word "concretus" (meaning compact or condensed), the perfect passive participle of "concrescere", from "con-" (together) and "crescere" (to grow).
Concrete is a composite construction material, composed of cement (commonly Portland cement) and other cementitious materials such asfly ash and slag cement, aggregate (generally a coarse aggregate made of gravel or crushed rocks such as limestone, or granite, plus a fine aggregate such as sand), water and chemical admixtures. The water reacts with the cement, which bonds the other components together, eventually creating a robust stone-like material.
Concrete is used to make pavements, pipe, architectural structures, foundations, motorways/roads, bridges/overpasses, parking structures, brick/block walls and footings for gates, fences and poles.
Curing serves two main purposes:
* It retains moisture in the structural members/ concrete specimens so, that the concrete continues to gain strength.
* It delays drying shrinkage until the concrete is strong enough to resist shrinkage cracking.
Why compaction is done for concrete?
* Compaction to achieve sound concrete .
* Expulsion of small tiny air bubbles presence in concrete is known as compaction.
* Main advantage of compaction is to prevent effect caused by Bleeding,
Segregation, etc.
Why reinforcement is necessary?
The purpose of this reinforcing is to accommodate tensile stresses and to minimize the width of cracks that do develop.
